Happy Memorial Day and Thank You to all who have served and are serving now!!

After the American Civil War the troops participated in the “Grand Review” in Washington DC, May 23, 1865.

On May 5, 1868, the  Union veterans organization, the "Grand Army of the Republic" (GAR) — established Decoration Day. A time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers.

Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that "Decoration Day" should be observed on May 30.

The first large observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C

Memorial Day, as it came to be called became an American holiday to honor troops  of all the wars. Now observed on the last Monday of  May, originated for the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.
